About Julia

Julia is an accomplished narrator, voice artist, singer/songwriter, NAACP-nominated L.A. theater director, voice coach, and mentor. Member of SAG-AFTRA and AEA.

Raised in New Mexico and shaped by her adult years in California, Julia ran the Malibu Playhouse, where she built a renowned children's theater program, and runs Malibu Vocal Studio. As Malibu Arts Commissioner, she created the Malibu City Gallery, and separately developed vocal programs in the city's elementary schools. She also founded an environmental nonprofit that blends music, theater, and kids.

She's traveled through places including India, Peru, Africa, Israel, Greece, and most of Europe — experiences that shaped her sense of pacing, humor, and humanity, and are part of why historical fiction, her favorite genre to read, feels like home behind the mic. When she's not in the studio, she's in the garden, in the company of her dog, cat, and a surprisingly charismatic desert tortoise named Bactria.

Why Julia

Julia's path to audiobooks wasn't a straight line — and that's exactly what makes her narration work. Directing theater trained her ear for pacing and stakes. Years as a singer/songwriter gave her a musician's instinct for rhythm and breath. Decades of voice coaching mean she can build and sustain distinct characters without losing the thread of the story. And years spent traveling through India, Peru, Africa, Israel, Greece, and most of Europe gave her genuine range with accent, dialect, and cultural texture — not studied, but lived.

Historical Fiction — Her favorite genre to read, and it shows. Theater directing means she thinks in period, place, and social stakes, not just voice, while her travels give her an ear for how culture and history actually sound — not a generic approximation of "the past." She knows how to make a world feel lived-in rather than narrated at.

Fantasy — Fantasy demands a huge cast of distinct voices sustained across a very long book, and that's where Julia's vocal training becomes the real asset. Years as a singer gave her the vocal agility to create and hold multiple distinct characters, and the stamina — trained the way a vocalist trains — to carry that range consistently from page one to the last chapter.

Mystery/Thriller — Pacing is everything, and pacing is a director's job. Julia knows exactly where to hold tension, where to let a line land, and where to speed up so a reveal actually lands.

Literary Fiction — This genre asks a narrator to disappear into the prose. Julia's acting background means she can carry interiority and subtext without overplaying it — she trusts the writing.

Nonfiction — Her coaching and mentoring work — plus running a nonprofit and serving as arts commissioner — mean she understands how to make information feel like it's being explained by someone who actually knows the subject, not read at you.
